Traditional & Historical Information:
Thyme has been used for centuries. The ancient Egyptians used it when embalming, the ancient Greeks burnt it as incense in their temples believing that thyme was a source of courage, while the Romans used it to purify their rooms. In the Middle Ages the herb was placed beneath pillows to aid sleep and to ward off nightmares. Knights were given thyme to give them courage as they went into battle. Thyme was also placed on coffins during funerals as it was believed to assure passage into the next life. The oil has been promoted for its antiseptic, anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. Thyme has been sited as useful for colds, coughs and respiratory conditions.
Thyme may be irritating to sensitive skin (if unsure, test a small space with a smudge of oil). Safe if used as directed. If ingested, drink milk and seek advice. Avoid contact with eyes: flush with water. Keep out of reach of children.
