Though it has a long standing as a culinary herb, in parts of Mesoamerica, where it is used in the traditional Temezcali cleansing ceremony, it is generally only considered for spiritual and medicinal purposes.
Basil leaves are sometimes crushed and put into the outer ear for ear infection. Basil has been utilised for headaches, anxiety and mental fatigue as well as stress management and decision-making. Historically Basil was antidote for the bite of some snakes and poisonous insects.
