Shea butter has been used for centuries on the African continent. Documents discovered from around the time of Cleopatra mention caravans bearing clay jars of shea butter for cosmetic use. Its protective and emollient properties have been primarily valued for skin and hair care. It has also been used as an anti-inflammatory for sprains and arthritis and as a healing salve for babies' umbilical cords. Recent clinical trials have found that shea butter helps to protect the skin against UV rays, soothe irritated and chapped skin, and moisturise the epidermis.
